Our picks in detail

What each pick does well, where it falls short and who should skip it. Strengths and limits come from each vendor's own pages, recent independent reviews and our Canva review, checked on 17 October 2026.

  1. Best overall: Adobe Photoshop

    Our rating: 4.8 / 5

Adobe Photoshop is a layer-based editor for retouching and compositing, with Generative Fill, the Remove tool and, since August 2026, edits you describe in words. You can use Adobe's Firefly models or partner models such as Google's Nano Banana in the same app.

    Strengths

    • A full layer and retouching toolset
    • Choice of Firefly or partner AI models
    • Photography plan adds Lightroom, 1,000 credits a month

    Limits

    • Subscription only, after a 7-day free trial
    • Partner AI models use more credits per edit
    • Single-app plan includes 25 credits a month

Skip it if you mainly sort and polish RAW photos. Adobe Lightroom costs less and is built for that job.

No free plan, 7-day free trial. Paid from $19.99 a month (Photography plan).

    Visit Adobe Photoshop

  2. Best for photographers: Adobe Lightroom

    Our rating: 4.7 / 5

Adobe Lightroom edits and organizes RAW photos on desktop, web and mobile, and its April 2026 update added assisted culling and search in plain language. Version 9.6, released on September 29, 2026, added Prompt to Edit and better reflection removal.

    Strengths

    • Built for editing and sorting large shoots
    • Free mobile app for core edits
    • Plan includes 1TB storage and Lightroom Classic

    Limits

    • Layers and compositing need Photoshop
    • 250 generative credits a month on this plan
    • The desktop app needs a subscription

Skip it if you'd rather buy once. Luminar and ON1 Photo RAW both sell one-time licenses.

Free mobile app. Paid from $11.99 a month.

    Visit Adobe Lightroom

  3. Best for quick edits in designs: Canva

    Our rating: 4.5 / 5

Canva puts AI photo tools such as Magic Edit, Magic Eraser, Magic Expand and a background remover inside its design editor. You fix a photo and drop it into a post, slide or ad without switching apps.

    Strengths

    • Very easy for non-designers
    • Free plan with up to 20 AI uses
    • Edit photos right inside your designs

    Limits

    • The background remover needs Canva Pro
    • Made for quick edits more than detailed retouching
    • AI tools have usage allowances on every plan

Skip it if you edit RAW files from a camera every day. Adobe Lightroom or Luminar are built for that work.

Free plan. Paid from $144 a year for one person.

  4. Best for AI upscaling: Magnific

    Our rating: 4.3 / 5

Magnific, the new name for Freepik since April 2026, offers an AI upscaler, and its image editor adds Skin Enhancer, Relight, Retouch and a background remover. Its paid plans include image models such as Nano Banana, plus more than 250 million licensed stock assets.

    Strengths

    • Upscales images up to 10K
    • Skin Enhancer with three modes
    • Upscaling, image models and stock in one plan

    Limits

    • Credit cost varies by model
    • Creative upscaling can change faces
    • Less suited to precise manual editing

Skip it if you want precise manual control over RAW photos. Adobe Lightroom or ON1 Photo RAW fit that better.

Free plan. Paid from $14.50 a month, excl. VAT.

How to choose an AI photo editing tool

Start with the kind of photos you edit and how you like to pay. Most tools here have a free plan, a free version or a trial, so test two of them on the same photo before you buy.

  • You retouch, composite or edit for clients

Adobe Photoshop is our pick. Its Photography plan costs $19.99 a month on an annual plan and includes Lightroom and 1,000 generative credits a month. The Photoshop-only plan costs $22.99 a month with 25 credits. Our advice: watch your credits, because partner models such as Nano Banana use more of them per edit than Adobe's Firefly models.

  • You shoot RAW and edit whole shoots

Adobe Lightroom is made for sorting and editing large batches, from $11.99 a month with 1TB of storage, and its mobile app is free for core edits. ON1 Photo RAW is the all-in-one alternative without a subscription: $99.99 buys version 2026 now and version 2027, expected in November 2026, with a 30-day free trial.

  • You'd rather not pay a subscription

Luminar, the new name for Luminar Neo, costs $129 once for the desktop app, and its free web version offers basic tools and exports up to 1,280 pixels. Its generative AI tools are included for 365 days and then need a Luminar Prime subscription, so check that before you rely on them. ON1 Photo RAW is also a one-time purchase.

  • You need clean backgrounds or product photos

Photoroom is built for product shots, with batch editing of up to 250 images. Its free version allows 100 exports a month, and Pro costs $7.50 a month billed yearly. Canva includes a background remover on its Pro plan, at $144 a year, which suits sellers who also make social posts. PicWish costs less, at $59.99 a year, and on paid plans its desktop app removes backgrounds from large batches.

  • You want to rescue noisy, soft or small photos

Topaz Photo removes noise, sharpens, recovers faces and upscales, on its own or as a plug-in for Lightroom Classic and Photoshop. It costs $199 a year for the Personal plan. Magnific upscales images up to 10K and adds skin and lighting tools, from $14.50 a month billed yearly. Our read: Topaz suits photographers who want faithful results, and Magnific suits creators who want a more creative finish.

  • You want quick edits in the browser for little money

Pixlr has a free photo editor with ads, and its Plus plan removes them for $1.99 a month billed yearly. Fotor is another easy option, with Pro at $3.99 a month billed yearly. Pixlr's pricing page says paid subscriptions can't be refunded, so it's worth trying the free version first.

Where did remove.bg, Luminar Neo and Topaz Photo AI go?

The standalone remove.bg website closes on December 1, 2026. Its background removal is moving into Canva, and its API to Leonardo.Ai, which is also part of Canva. Luminar Neo is now called Luminar, and Topaz Photo AI is now Topaz Photo. Topaz Labs is now part of Adobe, which says its apps stay available as standalone products.
