Which AI developer tool to start with
If you write code, start with one coding assistant. Add the others when a job starts costing you real time.
Pick one coding assistant first
If you write code most days, start with Claude Code or GitHub Copilot. Claude Code is built for handing off whole tasks across a project. Copilot works inside the editor you already use, with suggestions as you type, an agent and a free plan. Try both on the same task and keep the one that fits how you work.
Add a reviewer, then error tracking
CodeRabbit reviews pull requests and comments on the changes before a teammate looks. If your team works on GitHub and already pays for Copilot, its built-in code review may be enough to start. Once your app is live, Sentry tracks the errors your users hit. Playwright covers end-to-end browser tests, free and open source.
Website or app: decide by who signs in
If visitors mainly read your pages, a website builder such as Hostinger AI Builder is the simpler fit. If people sign in and work with data, use an app builder such as Lovable. Hostinger now covers simple apps too: in August 2026 it merged its website builder and its Horizons app builder into one AI Builder.
Use the free plan before you pay
GitHub Copilot, CodeRabbit, Sentry, Lovable, Bolt.new and GitBook all have free plans. Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan, from $17 a month billed yearly, and Hostinger AI Builder offers a free trial instead. Run each one on a real project before you rely on it.
AI developer tools FAQ
What are AI developer tools?
AI developer tools, such as Claude Code or Lovable, use AI to help you build software. Some write and review code, some track errors or write documentation, and some build a whole website or app from a plain-English description. We group them by job: coding, websites, apps, testing and debugging, and documentation. Each job has its own page with every tool we list for it.
What is the best AI developer tool in 2026?
Hostinger AI Builder, Claude Code and Sentry share our top rating as of October 2026, at 4.8 out of 5. The best one for you depends on the job: Hostinger AI Builder for a business website, Claude Code for coding and Sentry for errors in a live app. Lovable leads app building at 4.7, and GitBook leads documentation at 4.6.
Are there free AI developer tools?
Yes. GitHub Copilot includes 2,000 code completions a month on its free plan, and Sentry is free for one user with 5,000 errors a month. Lovable gives 5 credits a day, up to 30 a month, and Playwright is open source. CodeRabbit's free plan summarizes pull requests, while full reviews on private repositories are paid.
What is the difference between an AI website builder and an AI app builder?
An AI website builder such as Hostinger AI Builder is made for pages people read, while an AI app builder such as Lovable makes software people sign in to and use. Lovable builds a web app with a database and sign-in, and syncs the code to your Git repository. Hostinger now covers simple apps too, since it merged Horizons into its AI Builder in August 2026. If user accounts and stored data are the core of your project, start with an app builder.
What is the difference between a coding assistant and an AI code review tool?
A coding assistant such as Claude Code writes and changes code, while a code review tool such as CodeRabbit checks it before it is merged. CodeRabbit comments on pull requests and runs linters and security scanners alongside its AI review, on GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps and Bitbucket. If your team works on GitHub and already pays for GitHub Copilot, Copilot's built-in code review may be enough to start.
How are the tools on this page chosen?
Each card on this page leads with our top pick for that job, usually the highest-rated tool we have reviewed, followed by the next tools by rating. On testing and debugging, CodeRabbit (4.6) leads as our pick for code review, and Sentry (4.8) follows it for errors in live apps. Every rating is our overall score on a 5-point scale. Tools we list without a full review, such as Mintlify and OpenAI Codex, are on the job pages.

About this page
- What is listed
- The AI developer tools we have reviewed, one card for each kind of tool: website builders, coding assistants, app builders, testing and debugging, and documentation. Each card links to the full list for that job, which also includes tools we list without a full review, such as OpenAI Codex and Mintlify.
- How tools are chosen
- Each card leads with the highest-rated tool we have reviewed for that job, then the next tools by rating, with one exception. On testing and debugging, CodeRabbit (4.6) leads as our pick, because it catches bugs in code review, before code ships. Sentry (4.8), the higher-rated tool, follows it for errors in live apps. Only tools with a full review appear on the cards, so Mintlify (4.7) and OpenAI Codex (4.7) are listed on their job pages instead. Cards are ordered by the rating of the tool they lead with. Best overall goes to one of the three tools that share our top rating of 4.8, Hostinger AI Builder, Claude Code and Sentry, which are rated equally. Each "Skip it if" line comes from our review or our page for that job.
- Ratings
- Each rating is our current overall score for the tool, on a 5-point scale, rechecked between 14 and 18 October 2026. A score rates the whole product, so a broad platform can sit above a dedicated app. Tools with the same rating are rated equally. See how we test and rate tools.
- Prices
- The lowest paid plan, read from each vendor's own pricing page between 14 and 18 October 2026. Where a card says "billed yearly", the price is the rate on annual billing, and paying month by month costs more. Hostinger AI Builder's $2.99 a month needs a 48-month plan and renews at $10.99 a month. Claude Code is included in Claude's paid plans, not the free one.
