Our picks in detail
What each pick does well, where it falls short and who should skip it. Claude and ChatGPT share the top rating; Claude leads because it has a full review on this site. Strengths and limits come from that review, each vendor's own pages and independent 2026 sources, checked on 18 October 2026.

How to choose an AI spreadsheet tool
Start with the spreadsheet app you already use: Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini all work inside Excel or Google Sheets. Then decide whether you mostly build models, need help with formulas or want answers across several data sources.
Your work lives in Excel
Microsoft Excel includes Copilot with Microsoft 365 Personal, at $99.99 a year, and with business plans that bundle Copilot. If you already pay for an AI assistant, its Excel add-in may be all you need. Claude works in Excel on its paid plans, from $17 a month billed yearly, and ChatGPT for Excel runs on every ChatGPT plan, with limited use on Free and Go.
Your team works in Google Sheets
Gemini is built into Google Sheets on Workspace Business Standard ($14 per user a month) and higher plans, and on Google AI Pro for individuals. It is not part of Business Starter. ChatGPT for Google Sheets works on any ChatGPT plan, and Claude for Google Sheets has been in public beta on paid Claude plans since October 6, 2026.
You build or check financial models
Claude in Excel links each answer to the cells it used and keeps formulas connected when you change inputs, with data connectors such as S&P Global and LSEG. ChatGPT for Excel also links its answers to cells. Our advice: start from a copy of the workbook, and review every change before you share the file.
You want answers across several data sources
Better Analyst, the new name for Formula Bot, connects sheets, databases and BI tools, then answers questions in plain English and builds dashboards. It has a free plan, and Starter costs $14 a month billed yearly.
What happened to Formula Bot and Rows?
Formula Bot is now called Better Analyst. Existing accounts carry over, and formulabot.com redirects to the new site. Rows, an AI spreadsheet we used to list here, joined Superhuman and wound down on May 31, 2026, so it is no longer on this page.
AI spreadsheet tools FAQ
What is the best AI spreadsheet tool in 2026?
Claude is our top-rated AI spreadsheet tool in October 2026, at 4.8 out of 5, for building and checking models in Excel with answers linked to the cells behind them. Is there a free AI for Excel?
Yes, ChatGPT for Excel is available on the free ChatGPT plan, with limited use, and so is ChatGPT for Google Sheets. Excel for the web is free too, but Copilot needs a paid Microsoft 365 plan, starting with Microsoft 365 Personal at $99.99 a year. The Excel add-in from Claude needs a paid plan. Better Analyst also has a small free plan.
Does Google Sheets have built-in AI?
Yes, Google Sheets has Gemini built in on Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus and Enterprise plans, and on Google AI Pro and Ultra for individuals. Gemini can build or edit a whole spreadsheet from a prompt, and Fill with Gemini completes a column from a short description. Can AI build a financial model in Excel?
Yes, Claude in Excel and ChatGPT for Excel can both build or update a model from a plain-English request, and Copilot in Agent Mode can edit the workbook for you. Claude and ChatGPT link their answers to the cells they used, which makes each step easier to check. About this page
- What is listed
- AI tools that build, edit and analyze spreadsheets in Excel and Google Sheets. Claude and Formula Bot (now Better Analyst) have a full review on this site; ChatGPT, Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets are listed from their own pages and independent 2026 sources until we review them.
- Our picks
- Best overall is always the highest-rated tool on this page; when two tools tie, the one with a full review comes first. Each other pick is our choice for one kind of reader. Strengths and limits come from our Claude review, each vendor's own pages and independent 2026 sources.
- Ratings
- Each rating is our overall score on a 5-point scale, and the list is ordered by it. Tools without a full review carry an editorial rating until we test them. A score rates the whole product, so assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT are rated on more than spreadsheets. See how we test and rate tools.
- Prices
- The lowest paid plan that includes the AI features, on annual billing where the vendor offers it, read on each vendor's own pages on 17 and 18 October 2026. ChatGPT bills monthly only, and its Go price is the US price. Google's pricing page does not say whether the Business Standard price is the annual or the flexible rate, and it showed a limited-time offer beside it; the row shows the regular price.
- Update log
- 18 October 2026: new layout and a refreshed list, now led by the AI built into Excel and Google Sheets and by the Claude and ChatGPT add-ins. Rows wound down on May 31, 2026, and several smaller tools were taken off. Formula Bot appears under its new name, Better Analyst.
