Free plan. Paid from $12 a month (Premium).
How to choose an AI search engine
Start with what you search for. General AI search engines answer everyday and work questions from the open web, while academic tools search scholarly papers and cite the study behind each claim. Whichever you pick, open a couple of the cited sources before you rely on an answer.
You want quick, cited answers to everyday questions
Perplexity cites its sources in every answer, on every plan, including Free. Google AI Mode is free inside Google Search and handles images and files as well as text. If you already use ChatGPT, its search is built into every plan, Free included.
You need a long research report
Perplexity Pro, ChatGPT and Claude can each read many sources and write a report with citations. On Claude, web search is free and Research comes with the paid plans. Our advice: run the same question through two of them and compare the sources they found.
Privacy matters most
Brave Search runs on its own independent index and says it doesn't profile you. Its AI answers cite their sources and cost nothing, and an ad-free Premium tier is available in the Brave browser.
You work with academic papers
Consensus answers from scholarly research and maps each citation to an exact quote, with 10 Pro messages a month on its free plan. SciSpace adds chat with PDF, literature reviews, an AI writer and a Citation Verifier. Anara is the one to pick when you already have the papers: it answers from your own library and opens each citation at the passage.
Phind and You.com
Phind closed its search service on January 16, 2026, and You.com now focuses on search APIs for developers, so both have left this list.
AI search engines FAQ
What is the best AI search engine in 2026?
Perplexity is our best overall AI search engine for October 2026, at 4.8 out of 5, with citations in every answer and a free plan to start on. It shares that rating with ChatGPT and Claude, and comes first in 12 of the 15 independent 2026 rankings we checked. Google AI Mode (4.6) is our pick for free search inside Google, and Brave Search (4.4) our pick for privacy.
Is there a free AI search engine?
Yes: Google AI Mode is free inside Google Search, Brave Search gives AI answers with citations at no cost, and Perplexity, ChatGPT and Claude all include web search on their free plans. Free plans cap how much you can do each day, so check the limits before you rely on one. For academic work, Consensus allows unlimited paper searches and 10 Pro messages a month for free.
Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT for search?
Perplexity is the better fit when search is the main job: it is built around cited answers, lets Pro users choose the AI model, and adds the free Comet browser. ChatGPT is the better fit if you also want writing, images and coding in the same app, and its search works on every plan, Free included. Both rate 4.8 out of 5 in our rankings, so the choice comes down to how you work.
Which AI search tool is best for academic research?
Consensus is our top-rated academic search tool, at 4.3 out of 5: it searches over 400 million scholarly sources and maps every citation to an exact quote. SciSpace suits researchers who also want chat with PDF and an AI writer in one place. Anara is the pick when you already have your papers. Deakin University's library guide recommends Consensus for early exploration rather than systematic reviews.
Which AI search engine is the most private?
Brave Search is our pick for privacy: it runs on its own independent index, Brave says it doesn't profile you, and its AI answers are free. An ad-free Premium tier is available in the Brave browser. With the other tools here, check the history and data settings in your account if privacy matters to you.
Can you trust answers from AI search engines?
Yes, as a starting point: tools such as Perplexity and Consensus cite their sources so you can check them, but any AI answer can still contain mistakes. Open the citations for anything important, check that the source says what the answer claims, and lean on tools that link to the exact passage, as Consensus and Anara do.

About this page
- What is listed
- AI search engines that answer in full sentences with their sources, and AI search tools for academic papers. Claude and Anara have a full review on this site; the other tools are listed from their own pages and independent 2026 reviews until we review them.
- Our picks
- Best overall is always the highest-rated tool on this page. When tools share the top rating, we pick the one independent 2026 rankings place first most often. Each other pick is our choice for one kind of reader. Strengths and limits come from our Anara review, each vendor's own pages and independent reviews.
- Ratings
- Each rating is our overall score on a 5-point scale, and the list is ordered by it. Tools without a full review carry an editorial rating until we test them. A score rates the whole product, so assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude are rated on more than search. See how we test and rate tools.
- Prices
- The lowest paid plan, on annual billing where the vendor offers it, read on each vendor's own pages on 17 and 18 October 2026. ChatGPT and Google's AI plans show monthly prices only, and ChatGPT Go's $8 is the US price. Brave Search Premium, the ad-free tier, is priced at checkout in a Brave account.
- Update log
