    • AI agents for compliance and vendor risk
    • A Leader in Forrester's GRC Wave, Q2 2026

    Strengths

    • Open-source core, free to self-host

  3. Best done-for-you: Scytale

    Our rating: 4.5 / 5

Scytale pairs its compliance platform with expert help: the Build DFY (done for you) and Build Stronger plans add a dedicated consultant and a web-app penetration test. Its AI agent, Scy, generates a policy in one click, AI completes security questionnaires from your existing compliance data, and AI third-party risk management arrived in September 2026.

    • Dedicated consultant on Build DFY and Build Stronger
    • Web-app pen test included in those plans
    • Scy AI agent and AI third-party risk checks

How to choose an AI compliance tool

Start from the audit you need first, then decide how much of the work you want to do yourself. Almost every platform here gives its price after a call, so ask each vendor for the full first-year cost, including the auditor and any penetration test.

  • You need your first SOC 2 report

We'd start with Vanta, Sprinto or Secureframe. Vanta offers a 7-day free trial for SOC 2 and ISO 27001, so you can connect your systems before you buy. Sprinto automates 25+ frameworks out of the box and gives any company a free Trust Center. Secureframe is the only platform here that lists a price: from $7,500 a year for one framework.

  • You want an expert to do much of the work

Scytale's Build DFY and Build Stronger plans add a dedicated consultant, for up to six months or a full year, plus a penetration test. Kertos can act as your appointed external data protection officer (DPO) on its Pro plan, and as your external CISO, or security lead, on Premium.

  • You run several frameworks at once

Hyperproof lists 160+ pre-built frameworks and maps controls across them, which suits larger programmes. Drata added AI agents for vendor risk and security questionnaires, plus a tool, still in limited availability, to govern the AI agents your own company runs. Scrut Automation splits the work across nine AI Teammates, from policy drafting to evidence checks.

  • You sell to the US government

Secureframe Defense helps you meet CMMC 2.0, and Drata and Hyperproof also list CMMC among their frameworks. If an agency will use the platform itself, check its own authorization: Secureframe says it is among the first to reach FedRAMP 20x Moderate, Hyperproof has been FedRAMP Moderate authorized since March 2026, and Vanta's Government Cloud earned FedRAMP Class C through the 20x pathway in July 2026.

  • Your company is in the EU

Kertos is built in Germany around GDPR, ISO 27001, NIS2, the EU AI Act, TISAX and C5. Scytale, Scrut Automation and Drata also added EU frameworks in 2026, such as the Cyber Resilience Act and the Dutch NEN 7510 standard, if you need them next to SOC 2.

  • You want open-source code

Comp AI is built on an open-source core under the AGPLv3 licence. You can self-host it with Docker, using your own PostgreSQL database plus Resend for email and Trigger.dev for background jobs, or use its hosted service with a quote. Paid plans run for at least 12 months.

Does the platform replace the auditor?

No. These platforms monitor your controls and collect the evidence, but a licensed CPA firm issues a SOC 2 report and an accredited certification body issues an ISO 27001 certificate. Some platforms can add the audit to your package, as Scytale does, so ask whether a quote includes it.

AI compliance tools FAQ

What is the best AI compliance tool in 2026?

Vanta tops our 2026 ranking at 4.6 out of 5, and it's our pick for SaaS teams that need SOC 2 or ISO 27001 to close deals. Drata, Scytale and Sprinto follow at 4.5. For an open-source option you can self-host, we'd pick Comp AI, and for EU rules such as GDPR and NIS2, Kertos.

What do AI compliance tools do?

AI compliance tools such as Vanta and Comp AI connect to the tools you already use, monitor your security controls continuously and collect the evidence an auditor asks for. Their AI drafts policies and, on most platforms here, fills in security questionnaires. They prepare you for frameworks such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA and GDPR, while the audit itself stays with an independent auditor.

How much do AI compliance tools cost?

Secureframe is the only platform on this page that publishes a price, from $7,500 a year for one framework. Vanta, Drata, Sprinto, Scytale, Scrut Automation, Kertos, Hyperproof and Comp AI give a quote after a call. Buyer data from Vendr, updated in February 2026, puts the median Vanta contract at about $20,000 a year. Budget separately for the auditor, and ask whether a quote includes one.

Is there a free or open-source compliance tool?

Yes. Comp AI is built on an open-source core under the AGPLv3 licence, which you can self-host for free, though Enterprise Edition features need a commercial licence. Its hosted service is priced by quote. Vanta offers a 7-day free trial for SOC 2 and ISO 27001, and Sprinto's Trust Center is free for any company. The others give a price after a call or a demo.

How long does SOC 2 take with a compliance platform?

With Vanta, Comp AI or any platform here, the timeline depends mostly on the report type. Comp AI says startups can be ready for SOC 2 Type I and Type II in days. Vanta puts a typical Type 1 audit at about five weeks to two months. A Type 2 report also covers an observation window of three to twelve months, which you choose before the audit.

Which compliance tool is best for GDPR and EU rules?

Kertos is our pick for EU companies: it's built in Germany around GDPR, ISO 27001, NIS2, the EU AI Act, TISAX and C5, and its Pro plan makes Kertos your appointed external data protection officer. If you also need HIPAA for US customers, Drata covers it, along with the EU Cyber Resilience Act, which it added in September 2026.

Vanta or Drata: which is better?

Vanta suits SaaS teams that need SOC 2 or ISO 27001 to close deals, and its 7-day free trial lets you test it first. Drata suits growing teams that run several frameworks and want to govern the AI agents their company uses, a tool still in limited availability. Both give a price after a call. Vendr's buyer data puts the median contract at about $20,000 a year for Vanta and $24,900 for Drata.
