Our picks in detail

What each pick does well, its limits and who should skip it. Strengths and limits come from our reviews, each vendor's own pages and independent 2026 sources, checked on 18 October 2026.

  1. Best overall: Claude Code

    Our rating: 4.8 / 5

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent. It reads your codebase, edits files across a project, runs commands and opens pull requests, from the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, a desktop app or the browser.

    Strengths

    • Plans and makes changes across many files
    • Same agent in terminal, IDE, desktop and web
    • Most-used coding agent in Stack Overflow's 2026 survey

    Limits

    • Not included in Claude's Free plan
    • Five-hour and weekly usage limits apply
    • Built for Anthropic's own Claude models

Skip it if you mainly want suggestions as you type, inside the editor you already use. GitHub Copilot does that, with a free plan.

Free chat plan. Paid from $17 a month (Pro).

  2. Best for ChatGPT subscribers: OpenAI Codex

    Our rating: 4.7 / 5

Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. It works in a desktop app, an open-source CLI, an IDE extension and the cloud, and ChatGPT Plus adds automatic code review.

    Strengths

    • Included with ChatGPT, even on Free
    • Open-source CLI under the Apache 2.0 license
    • One agent across app, CLI, IDE and cloud

    Limits

    • CLI and IDE access starts with ChatGPT Plus
    • Usage limits follow your ChatGPT plan
    • Extra usage is bought with ChatGPT credits

Free plan. Paid from $8 a month (ChatGPT Go).

    Visit OpenAI Codex

  3. Best for teams on GitHub: GitHub Copilot

    Our rating: 4.6 / 5

GitHub Copilot is GitHub's AI coding assistant. It suggests code as you type in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs and other editors, its agent and chat can take on tasks, and paid plans review your pull requests.

    Strengths

    • Unlimited code completions on paid plans
    • Free plan with 2,000 completions a month
    • Business and Enterprise plans for teams

    Limits

    • Chat and agent use draw on monthly AI Credits
    • Heavy agent use can need extra credits
    • Free plan includes 50 chat requests a month

Skip it if handing off whole tasks is your main need. Claude Code and OpenAI Codex are built around that.

Free plan. Paid from $10 a month (Pro).

  4. Best for AI code review: CodeRabbit

    Our rating: 4.6 / 5

CodeRabbit reviews pull requests with AI and comments on the changes before a teammate looks. It also reviews code in your IDE or CLI before you open a pull request.

    Strengths

    • Free plan, and free Team features for open source
    • Reviews in the IDE and CLI before a PR
    • 14-day trial of the Advanced plan

    Limits

    • Free plan summarizes PRs rather than reviewing them
    • Priced per developer
    • Reviews code; it doesn't write features

Skip it if you need help writing code rather than checking it. Start with Claude Code, OpenAI Codex or GitHub Copilot, and add CodeRabbit later.

Free plan. Paid from $24 per developer a month.

How to choose an AI coding assistant

Start with how much you want to hand off. Inline assistants suggest code as you type; coding agents take a task, change files across your project and run commands. Try one real task from your own codebase on a free plan or for a single month before you sign up a whole team.

  • You want to hand off whole tasks

Claude Code plans a change, edits files across your project and runs commands, from the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, its desktop app or the browser. It needs a paid Claude plan, from $17 a month billed yearly. OpenAI Codex does the same job for ChatGPT subscribers, with an open-source CLI. CLI and IDE use start with ChatGPT Plus, at $20 a month.

  • You want help as you type, in the editor you use

GitHub Copilot works in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs and other editors. Code completions are unlimited on every paid plan, and the free plan includes 2,000 a month. Paid plans also review your pull requests. Since June 1, 2026, chat and agent use draw on monthly AI Credits, so heavy agent users should watch their balance in their first month.

  • You'd like an editor built around AI

Cursor is a full code editor built around AI agents. It has new plans since October 13, 2026: Plus, at $8 a month, uses Grok models only. Models from other AI companies need Premium, at $30 a month, and are billed by usage at API rates on top. OpenAI has said its models will leave Cursor on November 12, 2026. Google Antigravity is a free agent-first editor with weekly rate limits, raised with a Google AI Pro plan. Devin Desktop, formerly Windsurf, runs Devin's local agent in the editor, with Devin usage included in paid plans from $20 a month.

  • You want open source and your own model keys

Cline is a free, open-source coding agent that runs as a VS Code extension or a CLI. You bring your own key from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google, or pay for AI usage at cost, so your bill follows how much you use it. The Codex CLI is open source as well, and works with your ChatGPT plan.

  • Your team wants a review on every pull request

CodeRabbit reviews each pull request and can also check code in your IDE or CLI before you open one. Its free plan summarizes pull requests, open-source projects get Team features for free, and paid plans start at $24 per developer a month billed yearly. It reviews pull requests whichever tool wrote the code.

Windsurf is now Devin Desktop

Windsurf was renamed Devin Desktop on June 2, 2026, and windsurf.com now leads to Devin's site. Existing users received it as an update with the same plan and price. Devin's Pro plan includes a Windsurf IDE quota alongside Devin usage. Our Windsurf review was written before the change.

AI coding assistants FAQ

What is the best AI coding assistant in 2026?

Claude Code is the best AI coding assistant in our October 2026 rankings, at 4.8 out of 5, for handing off multi-step tasks from the terminal or your editor. OpenAI Codex (4.7) is our pick if you already pay for ChatGPT, and GitHub Copilot (4.6) suits teams that want AI inside the editors they use. For reviews on every pull request, CodeRabbit (4.6) is our top pick.

Is there a free AI coding assistant?

Yes. GitHub Copilot has a free plan with 2,000 code completions and 50 chat requests a month. Google Antigravity is free with weekly rate limits. Cline is free and open source; you pay only for AI usage. ChatGPT's Free plan includes Codex for quick tasks, and Cursor and Devin Desktop have limited free plans. Claude Code is the exception: it needs a paid Claude plan.

What is the difference between an AI coding assistant and an AI coding agent?

An AI coding assistant such as GitHub Copilot mainly helps while you type, with suggestions and answers in a chat panel. An AI coding agent such as Claude Code or OpenAI Codex takes a task, reads the relevant code, changes several files and runs commands until the job is done. Most tools on this page now do both, so pick by how much you want to hand off.

Should I use Claude Code or GitHub Copilot?

Choose Claude Code if you want to hand off whole tasks, such as a feature or a set of failing tests, and review the result. Choose GitHub Copilot if you want suggestions as you type in your current editor and admin controls for a team on GitHub. You can also use both: Copilot for everyday edits, and an agent for the larger jobs.

What happened to Windsurf?

Windsurf was renamed Devin Desktop on June 2, 2026, and windsurf.com now leads to Devin's site. Existing users got the change as an update and kept the same plan and price. Devin's local agent now works inside the editor. There is a limited free plan, and paid use starts with Pro at $20 a month.

Why aren't Tabnine, Amazon Q Developer or Blackbox AI on this list?

Tabnine, Amazon Q Developer and Blackbox AI have each changed in ways that matter for new users. Tabnine now offers Enterprise plans only. AWS has closed new Amazon Q Developer sign-ups and recommends Kiro, with the IDE plugins supported until April 30, 2027. Blackbox AI now focuses on an enterprise AI platform and has discontinued its VS Code integration. We list tools an individual developer can sign up for today.

How should I check code written by an AI coding assistant?

Treat code from any AI coding assistant like code from a new teammate, and add a review tool such as CodeRabbit for a second pass on each pull request. Run your tests and read every change before you merge it. Keep production secrets out of the agent's reach. AI review supports a human review rather than replacing it.
